Imtiaz Ali’s films have a romantic edge to them. Films like
Jab We Met and Love Aaj Kal, were out and out romantic flicks. Both these movies
portrayed the struggles of the modern day love stories. They showed how
eventually, after all the heedless drama, the lovers end up together. It represents
the love stories of the youth of today. The director, whose next release is Sajid Nadiadwala’s Highway, says that
he is not an expert on love or making love stories. He simply writes individual
characters and when they are interwoven in the story, they somehow end up
together. He says his next release Highway is definitely not a love story,
though it might come across as one.
He says that Highway is being perceived as the romantic
journey of the lead pair Veera and Mahaveer, played by Alia Bhatt and Randeep
Hooda, but it is not. It is in fact about their individual journeys. It is
about how these two characters learn so much about themselves, about each other
and about life in general. Alia is playing a city slicker in film, while
Randeep is a man from the countryside (a gujjar to be exact). When Alia is
kidnapped by Randeep and 2 more men, they embark on this journey across North
India. The film is shot in six different states namely Delhi, Haryana, Punjab,
Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir. This movie, which is being presented
worldwide by Sajid Nadiadwala under
his banner Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment Pvt Ltd in association with UTV
Motion Pictures, is going to release on the 21st of February 2014.
This movie is very special to Imtiaz Ali has he says the
story has stayed with him for 15 years. He believes that life is a journey and
travel is an important part of this journey, as we figure out new things about
ourselves when we are not confined in the small spaces of our homes. He has
explored this aspect in many of his films, be it Jab We Met or his debut
venture Socha Na Tha or his latest project, Sajid Nadiadwala’s Highway.
